CALL FOR PAPERS
The combination of international trade agreements and the new Internet economy is changing the environment in which companies and financial organizations do business. Although such developments open new channels for marketing and business for banks and financial institutions, they also pose challenges as they bring in the uncertainties and complexities of global competition.
At the dawn of the new millennium, this conference will focus on issues related to financial globalization with special emphasis on banking and currency crises. Based on the experience and success of the previous conferences organized by the Athenian Policy Forum, the Conference will discuss issues related with banking in emerging and transitional economies as well as the currency crises surrounding these economies. Although not complete, the following is a tentative list of topics to be discussed in the Conference. The Conference is open to new ideas and subjects that can be included among the followings:
The globalization of commercial banks
Does globalization of banks drain funds from emerging nations?
Can foreign banks serve a developing nation as adequately as domestic banks?
Are private banks superior to state-owned banks?
What is the appropriate role of central banks (G-7)? Is it symmetric between developed
and developing nations?
The EMU and its implications for global banking
The Euro and its future: stability and risks
Turkeys inclusion to the European Union as well as other candidate countries
Recent crises in global banking
Global Banking: Regulations and remedies
The new role of the IMF and the World Bank
The new role of the Internet economy
The implications of electronic commerce in banking and economy
ORGANIZATION
The Athenian Policy Forum in co-sponsorship with the host Universities has organized conferences in several cities including Chicago (Loyola U.), Toronto (York U.) and Athens (AUEB). The one-and-a-half-day conference will be hosted in Izmir with generous contributions by the Izmir State Chamber of Commerce. Professor Burak Kazaz (Loyola U.) is the Convenor and Conference Chair assisted by APF Fellows Professors Nicholas Lash, Anastasios G. Malliaris (Loyola U.) and Bala Batavia (DePaul U.), as Conference Co-Chairs. Professor Christos Paraskevopoulos (York U.) is the Honorary Conference Chair. The organizers of the Conference will invite several distinguished guests to present papers. The goal of the Conference is to attract around 50 experts in the fields of Financial Globalization and Currency Crises for an intensive scientific dialogue and a significant exchange with industry and practitioners.
