THE GLOBAL ECONOMY: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Athens, Greece, August 25-27, 2000
THEME
The Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece, York University, Toronto,
Canada and the Athenian Policy Forum, Inc. are pleased to announce that a fifth biennial
conference will be held in Athens, Greece, August 25-27, 2000.
The theme of the millennium conference will be "The Global Economy: Challenges and
Opportunities for the 21st Century". The conference will continue the program
of work which has been ongoing with great success since 1992, and has resulted in eleven
major publications to date, the most recent under the imprint of the APF PRESS.
In drawing on the ancient Greek and Athenian tradition of discussing important issues in
public, this conference will continue to focus on the challenges faced particularly by the
small and middle-sized countries in the contemporary era of globalization. It will examine
and debate issues and concerns that may have been overlooked by mainstream analysis
oriented to the interests of the major players. To this end, the themes of globalization,
unequal development and asymmetry, developed by previous publications, will be
maintained.
Accordingly, the aim of this conference is to take stock and look ahead at the
globalization proesss (a retrospective and prospective evaluation) both within the
existing major trading blocs, such as NAFTA and the EU, and elsewhere, as the global
economy ushers in the new millennium.
